2006 KnoxieCross Winter
Cyclocross Series - Recap
Well, the 2006 KnoxieCross series is over.
I'm thrilled with the turnout, in all weather conditions. It
seems like everybody who gives it a try either falls in love
with cyclocross or never comes back. Either way, it's a win/win
situation for a race promoter. In the end, I'm surrounded by
enthusiastic people who love what they're doing. That's always
a good situation to be in. It was great getting to know some
new racers and getting reacquainted with some familiar faces
from last year. I'm always overwhelmed that people keep coming
back.
In my experience promoting cycling events,
I have developed a sense for whether an event will make it or
not. I've always said that a good idea generates its own energy.
Some ideas have to be nursed along a little bit before they start
generating that energy. Cyclocross seems to have been nursed
along to that point now. I think cyclocross has arrived in Knoxville.
Because of the energy you put into the races this year, I feel
confident that we can make this series happen every year without
having to pull it up by its bootstraps every time. Hopefully,
you'll share your good experiences with some friends and get
them to come with you next year and the event will grow.
And we surely did some growing this year.
I'm particularly thrilled with the turnout of younger racers.
Watching the Whitakers slugging away at every race has been really
inspiring. Seeing Stephen Basset's face when he picked up his
prize... well that has made my week. We'll definitely be having
a Junior's 14 & Under division next year. I'm sorry
I didn't have it to begin with. But thank you guys and gals for
coming to the races and sticking it out to the end. Tell your
friends.
I know there are things we can improve
upon. I need to figure out a way to make the B/Women/Jr field
smaller. Some of you B's probably need to move up. Search your
conscience and we'll see you next year. Maybe I'll make a C category
next year. This is a work in progress. To that end, I invite
your comments. Think about it and if you feel motivated shoot
me an email at jtbroad@hotmail.com or call me at 609-8282. Let
me know what you think could be improved upon. Or just send some
love. That's always nice.
Also, I mentioned at the race, if you think
about it give Knox County Parks & Recreation some of that
love too. After last week's mudfest at Alcoaway Park, they got
some complaints about the condition of the park afterwards. I
addressed the Parks & Rec peoples' concerns and that's all
over with. But if the only feedback they ever get about Cyclocross
in their parks is negative, then they might not be so willing
to work with us next time we want to have a race. So, if you
enjoy cyclocross racing in Knox County parks, you should let
them know that. 215-6600 is their phone number parks@knoxcounty.org
is their email address. Doug Bataille (pronounced "buh tell")
is the Director.
Finally, I could not do any of this without
the help of a lot of people and businesses who donated their
time and merchandise to the series. I try to express my gratitude
to these folks whenever I get the chance. But language fails
to really convey how grateful I am for their help & support.
But here's a try, anyway. In no particular order, thank you so
much to:
