9th Annual 12 Hours of the Hill of Truth 2007

The 9th Annual 12 Hour of the Hill of Truth Mountain Bike Race is in the books now and I am simply thrilled with this year's edition. By any standard of measure, it was a resounding success. We had 244 racers (a new record), fantastic weather (finally!), nobody went to the hospital and the trails were in perfect (and I mean Perfect, with a capital P) shape. Most everyone went home happy and I'm very tired.

An event of the size this one has grown into is a group effort. Me and Kent may be the faces on the race, but there are lots of other people working hard to pull the thing off. I never feel like I can adequately thank those people who put their time, effort and heart into this race. Hopefully, I told you how much I appreciate any and all help whenever it was rendered, but I'd like to publicly thank the following people and organizations for their wonderful efforts (in no particular order):

I hope I haven't forgotten anybody, but my brain is still a bit frazzled by the weekend, so anything's possible. If I left your name off the list, please know that I do appreciate your help. We've already come up with a few ideas for next year's race: our big 10 year edition. If you have suggestions or comments about this year's race or next year's, send them to me at jtbroad@hotmail.com or Kent at stephandkent@comcast.net. Until then, we'll see you out on the trail...

2006 12 Hours of the Hill of Truth
Race Report

Well, the 8th annual 12 Hours of the Hill of Truth Mountain Bike race is in the books now. When Kent and I started this thing back in 1999,we didn't know if anybody would respond to the idea. Admittedly, it's
been an uphill climb at times just trying to put together all the pieces that make up this race. But people have indeed responded and taken ownership of this event and I think it has become a real showcase for Knoxville cycling. I'm very proud of what it has become and that's thanks to so many people.

George Crawford and crew took a ton of pictures and he has them for sale at his website here:
http://dgcphoto.photoreflect.com Go take a look.

Scores are here:
http://www.highland-adventures.com/12hourindex.htm

We had 187 racers gathered for the firing of the cannon to start the race. That's down just a bit from last year (when we had 208 racers) but still a very respectable number. Given the torrential downpour we
had the day before the race, I'm quite pleasantly surprised at the turnout. The course was very muddy and sloppy for the first hours of the race, but I had many reports from racers that it got considerably
better as the day progressed. Mark Patterson went out on the course several times and did trail repair/drainage work that helped things considerably. Thanks Mark, for all you do. Kevin & Joel hiked in the pouring rain for several hours to help with the last minute course reroute (big thanks guys).

It's been an emotional rollercoaster for me this past couple of weeks. The usual build-up to the 12 Hour race, the last minute deluge that dropped 2 inches of rain on the previously perfect course, the last
minute reroute necessitated by said rain, the race itself. But I need to give a shout out to the many, many people who helped make the 12 Hour race such a success, despite all the obstacles. Every year, I ask for help with this race and every year I'm overwhelmed by the generosity of people who come through for me. Sponsors, volunteers, staff people, all go the extra mile to make this race such a fun time for both the racers and the promoters. Here is a list. I hope it's complete, but I'm sure I'll forget somebody. Forgive me for that, in advance. Just know that I am filled with gratitude for everyone that does even a little bit to make this thing
happen.

All of the above people and businesses support mountain bike racing in East Tennessee. You should patronize their businesses whenever you get the chance. They're good people who share your love of cycling and competition.

Thank you all for your help. And thank you for racing. And for coming back every year to race for 12 Hours at Haw Ridge Park. We'll see you next year, if not before

cheers

2005 12 Hours of the Hill of Truth
Race Report

You know how you can repeat a word or phrase over and over again until
it becomes a meaningless set of sounds? Well, Saturday, I said "Thank
You" so many times that it became meaningless to me. I hope it isn't
meaningless to you, because I have to say it again. Several times. Here
goes...

The 7th Annual 12 Hours of the Hill of Truth was the biggest success
yet. We had 208 racers and one of the prettiest days of the year. We
did have a couple of injuries (a broken collarbone and a broken bone in
a hand) but nothing life threatening. We hope you heal quickly. We put
in place a new electronic scoring system that worked without a hitch.
The scores were continuously updated and sent out onto the World Wide
Web. So families of racers could log on and check their progress all
day long. Jay Nevans and Philippe Hanset deserve a mountain of praise
for the hard work they did in making this happen.

You can find the results here:
http://www.cs.utk.edu/~phanset/12hours

The competition was good. The Huffy got jumped, tossed and eventually
roasted. We also had a wedding take place during the race.
Congratulations Gerry and Susie! A good time was had by all, as far as
I can tell.

Professional photographer Rick White took lots of pictures. You can
look at his shots and buy prints from him here:
